THE NEW MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN RHODE ISLAND,
I DON’T THINK SO.
He may be the most powerful man at the State House, but the most powerful person in Rhode Island is a constituent in House District 15, and there are 732,235 others, in 74 other districts across this state, who are equally as powerful.
The new Speaker only received 3,856 votes or 38.2% % of the eligible vote in the 2012 election – and once again, that’s not counting those who are not registered to vote but could be by the 2014 election.
‘Liars figure and figures lie’ is a very old adage, but it is the absolute truth in the way elections have always been reported,. The moment a winner is announced the actual number of votes a winner received is turned into a percentage of the total number of votes cast; not a percentage of the eligible vote. They do this to artificially control the perception that the newly elected is unbeatable. And that is how they control the outcome of the next election – by keeping expectations and the turnout small.
An informed electorate is probably more dangerous to them than an informed jury. They just can’t have it. But FED UP in RI is going to continue hammering this message home, time and time again, until everyone in Rhode Island realizes that the gig is up and that elected officials have to be more responsive to us than to the special interests who only provide money to them, but not precious votes.
